Limonene is one of natures solvent chemicals - solvents are materials that can dissolve other materials and as such, solvents are quite often used in cleaning to dissolve dirt and grime ready for rinsing.
D Limonene is extracted from orange peels discarded from making orange juice and as such can come from anywhere that oranges are grown and processed for juicing.
Chemically Limonene is a terpene and this family of chemicals exists in many plant species where they act as natural repellants both for insects and for herbivores.
The most common use of Limonene in the cosmetic/ personal care/ home care industry is as a natural solvent for cleaning of worktops and equipment, as a perfumery or flavour compound or as a natural component of citrus essential oils. Limonene is not often added to skin care products other than as part of a perfume as it can cause skin irritation.
Use: As a solvent for natural cleaning products including for cleaning laboratory/ workspaces. Perfume additive (aroma chemical).
Use rate: Heavily dependent on what you are using this for. In cleaning products it may be used at levels up to 20% but in finished cosmetics as part of a perfume it falls under the EU's 26 fragrance allergens and has to be listed as an allergen if the finished product contains more than 100ppm (0.01%) wash-off or 10ppm (0.001%) leave-on. This law is not applicable to Australian businesses but it is useful to note if you are looking to make products for people with sensitive skin. When making natural cleaning products you can (and probably should) suggest the wearing of gloves to prevent irritation.
