Witch Hazel is a native to North America. It is an astringent herb that is usually extracted in an alcohol | water blend to facilitate the full extraction of the tannins. Where clients wish to avoid the alcohol, the powdered extract can be used, although the bioavailability of the tannins may well be less.
Traditional use of this herb was for soothing skin rashes, in perfumery as a solvent/ perfume note, as a skin tonic/ toner and as an astringent.
Solubility: This extract has a high degree of water solubility as supplied but it will produce a cloudy-ish brown solution indicative of the fact that the extract won’t fully solubilise. We recommend, in most situations, to prepare your herb into demineralised water and then filter out any residue before adding it to your product.
Use Amount: This herb is 5 times more potent than fresh Witch Hazel so to create a single strength liquid extract you would add 20g of herb to 80g of water and then filter it. You could use that water as-is in your formula (so as your water phase) or you could take that single strength liquid and add it into your formula at any percentage.
Typical Dose: 1-10% of a 1:1 liquid extract.
Heat Stability: Very high. You could use this as your water phase in an emulsion and heat it but it is more typical to use this as an extract and add it at the end of manufacturing.
Cosmetic Function: Astringent, soothing agent and tonic.
Please Note: These products are for cosmetic use only and not to be consumed.
