Ingredients: Acacia Senegal Gum, Xanthan Gum
This water swellable powdered gum acts as an effective thickener for product needing to build viscosity naturally. The benefit of this dual thickener over straight xanthan gum is that it gives a less stringy thickening effect making it able to produce more elegant and cosmetically acceptable products.
Mixing Instructions: As with most powders, this should be added to the water while it is being stirred to prevent agglomeration. The use of a defloculator plus a homogeniser is recommended although for small batches a hand mixer should work. If homogenizing mix for 10 minutes at between 1100 - 1300 rpm to ensure maximum hydration. A thickened lotion can be achieved with 0.5-1.5% and a cream from 1.5-2.5. Beyond that you can achieve a gel consistency however, this is also dependant on what else is in your formulation. It thickenes a lot quicker than straight xanthan gum saving you time, energy and of course money!
Compatibility: This gum can thicken in the presence of salts, surfactants, peroxide and acids. In fact, between 0.6-1% salt is recommended as a viscosity booster. It works between pH 3-12. This thickener is not suitable for products that contain high concentrations of acids or are set at a low pH, it may become too thick to use over time.
Recommended for: Creams, lotions, gels, shampoos, body washes, depilatories and conditioners. Not for spray products.
Use Levels: 0.1- 3%
