Product Description
Ingredients: Sodium Citrate Dihydrate
Sodium Citrate is often used as a buffering agent.
Origin: Manufactured from citric acid.
Functionality: Sodium Citrate is often paired with Citric Acid in a formula to create a buffer solution. Buffer solutions are useful in cosmetics where a key ingredient might become unstable if the pH shifts too far from a starting point. This can be the case in AHA products, Self-tanners, sunscreens, zinc balms and many others.
Sodium citrate is often added as part of a products preservative strategy.
A Sodium Citrate/ Citric Acid buffer will usually keep a product at a pH of between 5.6 and 6.2 depending on the concentration of each ingredient.
Here are some general buffering guidelines:
@ pH 4 Citric Acid 0.12% : Sodium Citrate 0.11%
@ pH 4.5 Citric Acid 0.1%: Sodium Citrate: 0.15%
@ pH 5 Citric Acid 0.07% : Sodium Citrate 0.19%
@ pH 5.5 Citric Acid 0.046%: Sodium Citrate 0.22%
@ pH 6 Citric Acid 0.024% : Sodium Citrate 0.26%
