APPLICATION: This ingredient is a fantastic addition to any hard-to-preserve formulation. It works as an all-natural chelating agent that binds up the food that your pesky microbes feed from. Most cosmetic formulations sit at a pH of around 6 and as such provide bugs with the perfect environment to grow. Chelating agents help your preservatives to work better and help improve your products overall stability.
USAGE: This is water soluble and is usually added straight away so that it can ensure your water stays clean! It is readily soluble in water but if you have a very low water content in your formula add it to Glycerine.
0.1-0.3% is typically required.
FORMULATION TIPS: Sometimes chelating agents can help you LOWER the amount of preservative that you need to add. However, that can't be known unless you carry out some Preservative Efficacy Tests. If you are looking to formulate more efficiently and reduce your preservative levels you may find it useful to run some trials of your own.
Sodium Phytate is a slightly salty active. In some cases salty actives can affect the stability of your emulsion, especially if this is combined with other salty materials. Simple freeze/ thaw testing will confirm whether the addition of this to your formula is affecting your stability. Freeze thaw involves taking a small amount of material, popping it into your freezer for 24 hours and then thawing it for 24 hours before repeating a minimum of three times. If the product loses its form or starts to leak moisture it requires a formula tweak.
