Papaya is a native fruit of Mesoamerica that has been utilised by humans for generations. Papaya's enduring popularity means it still ranks in the top five cultivated tropical crops (1)
Like most tropical fruits Papaya is rich in antioxidants but it is arguably best known for its enzymatic activity. Papaya produces two enzymes that can safely brighten and chemically exfoliate the skin: Papain and Pectinestase, of these it is the papain that is best known. Together the enzymes make up around 1% of the fruits weight and they have been found to elicit positive effects on the skin when used at 0.2% (2)
