Did you know? Shea Nilotica (Vitellaria Nilotica) is a subspecies of the Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) and is primarily found in the Nile River Valley region of East Africa, including countries like Uganda and South Sudan. Shea Nilotica trees are known for their relatively smaller size compared to the Shea trees found in West Africa. They typically grow to be around 15 to 20 feet tall, while Shea trees in West Africa can reach heights of up to 50 feet or more. This smaller size makes Shea Nilotica trees more accessible for harvesting, as the nuts can be collected without the need for large-scale commercial equipment. This has led to a greater degree of manual and community-based harvesting of Shea Nilotica nuts by local women in East Africa, contributing to the sustainable and empowering aspect of its production.
