Summary
This pure, spray-dried Tomato Juice is rich in Lycopene – a rich red carotenoid pigment with skin rejuvenating and UV protective qualities. The juice also contains vitamin C, Calcium, Vitamin B6 and Iron.

Process
Produced by taking freshly squeezed Tomato and spray drying them. Spray drying concentrates the antioxidants naturally present in the fruit juice. The process also stabilises the phytochemicals by drying off the water. Most Tomatoes contain around 95% water when fresh so 5g of this Tomato juice powder would provide the same antioxidant hit as you would get from a 100g of fresh Tomato juice.
Appearance
Deep red particulates. Free flowing when dehydrated
Odour
Mild, characteristic of Tomato but not strong enough to be used as a major odour active.
Solubility
Water soluble but does form some precipitate so best to filter before adding to a water-only formulation like a spritzer.
pH of reconstituted powder
around 4.5
Heat stability
Will tolerate heating for a short time but best to add into your formula once the temperature is below 50C as some of the will start to break down with excessive heat.
Use instructions
To create a re-constituted Tomato juice mix 0.5 parts Tomato powder to 9.5 parts water (5% powder to 95% water). Add to your formula in the cool-down phase if possible and for best stability, maintain a product pH of below 5.5. Final product pH is a more important factor in polyphenol stability than heat treatment during manufacturing.
Typical use level
Between 0.5-5% on an ‘as supplied’ basis but can be used in higher quantities if required.
Examples of applications
- Being rich in Lycopene, products containing tomato extract are great for daily skin protection. Add a pinch to your daily moisturising cream for an extra bit of protection.
- This super red antioxidant-rich powder can be added into your mineral make-up for a hint of natural blush. Blends well with iron oxides and/or mica.
- Add a little into your lipstick formulations – be sure to add a preservative as this is a water rather than oil soluble powder. For best results pre-mix in glycerine or hydrolite 5 then emulsify into your balm using lecithin.
