Description: This perennial herb can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade, and develops bright yellow flowers in late Spring. It requires moist soil but is very hardy and is now becoming quite invasive in some habitats. The herb and the fruit are sometimes used as a tea substitute.

Common Uses: Anti-inflammatory, astringent, vulnerary, nervine, antimicrobial, antidepressant. The herb is being increasingly recommended to assist in the treatment of depression, neuralgic pain, fibrositis, sciatica, and rheumatic pain. Externally, it is used as a valuable healing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent. Furthermore, Hypericin one of the active constituents found in Hypericum - has been found to have potent antiviral benefits. Hypericum has also been found to be especially useful in helping to heal bruising.

History: The genus name Hypericum is from Greek and means "over an apparition" as the herb was once considered odiferous enough to cause evil spirits to depart. The name Saint John's Wort is said to be in honor of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem who used this herb to treat battlefield wounds.
Cautions: May cause irritation to eyes, respiratory system, or sensitive skin if applied neat. Best avoided if pregnant, if you have sensitive skin, or before going out into the sun.
