Borage Oil is extracted from the seeds of Borago officinalis (an annual bristly herb) after which it is refined then deoderised. The main fatty acity in borage is Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) typically in concentrations of 17 - 20%. Borage is well known as being one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids that exists in nature which makes it useful to help ease sunburned and mature skin. Typically, Borage Oil is diluted with other carrier oils due to the price and oily residue.

Borage, also known as star flower has a long history of medicinal use in Europe. The seeds produce an oil rich in linoleic acid.
Quality: This is classified as a Virgin oil which is a term designed by the food industry as a measure of quality. While it isn't necessarily as relevant for cosmetic use, some brands prefer purchasing virgin quality oils where possible.
Consistency: Typical and characteristic of carrier oils
Absorption: Absorbs into skin at average speed, slight oil feeling left on skin.
Cautions: Borage Oil is not recommended for ingestion in pregrancy but is thought to be safe for topical use. New Directions oils are not sold for ingesting.
