Common Name: Dragons Blood (Sangre De Drago)
Plant Part: 100% Pure Sap
Odour Profile: Bitter, herbal, medium strength/ not overpowering.
Colour: Deep red
Solubility: Water dispersible, some sedimentation may be present
Origin: Peru, South America.
Application: Traditionally used as a pain relief agent and anti-inflammatory agent. In cosmetic preparations it is also a useful anti inflammatory and can be used to help with barrier repair and to improve the appearance of dried or damaged skin. It is also said to be great for relieving the initial sting of an insect.
Caution: There are no known cautions but as this is a powerful active we suggest using sparingly. As far as manufacturing goes be aware that the deep red colour of this extract will impact on the whiteness of your cosmetic emulsions.
Use instructions: Add between 1-5% into your final formulation taking care to check the affect it has on your products colour before commercialisation. This extract may be deep red to brown in colour and has a mild, characteristic aroma. As mentioned with the solubility, Dragon's Blood is a natural latex-like sap in structure and will be difficult to fully disperse through a product. The sap liquid may be quite thin or even gel-like with a tendency to become thicker over time as the water bound up in the sap is released to the environment (evaporation). The sap can be made more fluid and workable by heating it in a water bath, it can then be added into a warmed base product where it should disperse easier.
