Product Description
Ingredients: Maltodextrin, Biosaccharide Gum-1, Water
INCI: Maltodextrin, Biosaccharide gum-1
Ingredient Form: Water-Soluble Powder.
Skin soothing gelling and hydrating active for long-lasting hydration and barrier protection.
This ingredient is a sugar-derived polymer made from bacterial fermentation. The polymer is anionic in nature and has a high molecular weight of around 1 million daltons. The sugar polymer is made up of repeating fucose, galactose and galacturonic acid and is made into a light gel by adding between 1%-10% to water.
Function: Hydrating, emolliency/ softness, viscosity booster (gel former similar to medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid but more heat tolerant), soothing and protecting. Binds to fucose receptors in the skin (Receptors are located in the langerhans cells. These cells are part of the skins immune system and anti-microbial response as well as being involved in the irritation response).
Dose: Up to 1% is typical as an active but for use in forming an active skin restoration gel use between 5-10%. Gelling can be enhanced when this is combined with other gellants such as xanthan gum or guar.
Application: Beneficial in all products including scalp care, beard treatments, facial and body skin care, anti-ageing and treatment products where it helps to soothe and strengthen skin barrier functioning.
Solubility: Sugar polymers such as this hydrate in water but they don't dissolve, instead this forms a light, clear gel that is thick enough to use as a light serum base when used at high levels but will mostly stay quite fluid.
Note: In Anhydrous (Dry) products this ingredient will offer little benefit until it is hydrated. If you wish to add this to a dry formulation ensure adequate mixing and swelling time before use to gain the benefit from this sugar-based active. There is little benefit in adding this to a formula that is 100% oil based.
