Product Description
Ingredients: Carrageenan
Carrageenan (iota type) is a natural water-swellable thickening agent commonly used in skin care products. Gels made with Carrageenan are typically acid stable.
Origin: This product is naturally derived from Red Seaweeds
Appearance: Yellowish to white powder
Odour: Almost odourless
To Form A Gel: Iota Carrageenan gels will thicken in water alone in a dose-dependent manner. Increased thickening and suspending power can be achieved with the addition of a cationic salt (typically at 10% of the gelling agent level) such as Calcium. Calcium ions bond with the sulfur that's naturally present in the gum to create a three-dimensional, flexible elastic gel.
Carrageenan gels best when it has been through a heat/cool cycle.
Heating the water/ gum mix decreases the time taken for the Carrageenan to fully swell and wet out. We recommend using heat - 60-80C to ensure a fast and efficient gum hydration. The powder can be introduced and wetted through your water phase using a mixer of
This gelling agent pairs well with Gum Arabic (Acacia Gum) and that combination is especially recommended if you wish to make a natural gel that has enhanced oil-stabilising properties.
Carrageenan Type: Iota - Great for soft, elastic gels (the other common cosmetic type is Lambda which won't gel but does thicken and can be used in cold process).
Benefits: It is a naturally derived thickening agent that imparts a soft, silky feel to skin and hair care products. The feel can turn a little slimy if you add too much so start with around 0.4% and see how that feels. A great thickener for serums as the extract its self is highly moisturising. This is also able to form crystal clear solutions.
Recommendations: Typically used up to 2%
Applications: Use as a thickening agent in creams and gels. This Carrageenan also has some suspending power so can be used in exfoliating gel cleansers.
